  Professor Lin's major research interests include molecular pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the relationship between EBV and NPC, genetic alteration of NPC and EBV-infected NPC, regulation of gene expression in NPC, and peptide-targeted chemotherapy against NPC and other cancer types. So far, he has established ten NPC cell lines for investigation of molecular alteration in NPC and in EBV- infected NPC genes. When he found that the normal squamous metaplastic nasopharyngeal epithelia and a fraction of NPC cells were EBV free, this phenomenon led him to discover a new EBV infection pathway, i.e. EBV can infect NPC cells through IgA receptor mediated endocytosis. Using this method to study the relationship between EBV and NPC, he concludes that EBV plays a role in enhancing the tumor progression, but not involves in the initiation or promotion process of NPC tumorigenesis.

His laboratory has established several specific peptides which can specifically bind to NPC and other cancer cell lines, but not normal cells when these peptides are linked to the liposomes containing chemotherapeutic drug. These complexes can bind to and kill specifically NPC and other cancer xenograft tumor cells with minimal adverse effect. The whole project is going on and approaching to the phase I clinical trial stage. Besides, using established NPC cell line, the NPC gene expression profiling has been established and some excitable transcription factors related to promote NPC progression such as SOX5 gene have been observed. In addition, his lab has also established an ovarian cancer cell line; the genetic alteration of this ovarian cancer line is elucidated and characterized. Functional analysis of some interested gene such as IGFBP3 has been performed.

In order to accelerate the progression of this research project to move to phase I clinical trial, recently he and his colleagues have obtained some research grant from NSC to study this project. So he is still working very hard to accomplish this mission. Right now he is able to accept one new PhD student and one new master student per year to instruct their research works in his laboratory.
