The present invention provides a Liver X Receptor (LXR) regulator in a cell, and the LXR regulator comprises fucoxanthin and its metabolite, fucoxanthinol. The LXR regulator can regulate the transcriptional activity of LXR in cell, and antagonize the transcriptional activity of LXRα and/or LXRβ promoted by LXR agonists. In other aspects, the present invention also provides a method for manufacture of composition of fucoxanthin or its metabolite for regulating LXR activity in cell. The LXR regulator in a cell and the application thereof according to the present invention can regulate the transcriptional activity of LXR in cell, and can further be used as alternatives for LXR agonist or antagonist, or supplements, for enhancing LXR-related symptoms.
